RCMP lay charges after pursuit in central Alberta

A Red Deer man is facing numerous charges after a police pursuit Friday.

Officers from Sylvan Lake responded to an initial complaint of a man attempting to steal a snowmobile in which the complainant alleges the suspect pointed a handgun before fleeing in a vehicle.

The victim was able to follow the suspect and direct police to the suspect vehicle, which was travelling east on Rainy Creek Road towards Highway 20.

Officers located the vehicle in Bentley, Alberta but two suspects fled from the vehicle and officers gave chase.

However, one of the suspects was able to get back to the vehicle and flee the scene.

During the vehicle pursuit the suspect attempted to ram one of the police vehicles by backing up at a high rate of speed but was unsuccessful in hitting the car.

The pursuit ended on Highway 12 where the suspect got caught in deep snow after trying to avoid a spike belt.

Christopher Stephen Wales, 31, now faces 24 charges including possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and breach of probation among others.

Wales is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday, December 9.
