Alberta couple spends anniversary holed up in Miami apartment to wait out Hurricane Irma

An Alberta couple is spending their second wedding anniversary holed up in their Miami, Fla. apartment and sleeping in their hallway as they try to outlast Hurricane Irma.

Thirty-three-year-old Logan Jones, from Ardrossan, and 34-year-old Lindsey Hebblethwaite, from Fort McMurray, moved to Miami about one year ago for work. They live on the 22nd floor of a fairly new high-rise building and chose to hunker down instead of evacuating.

“We felt safer in here than a lot of other places,” Jones said. “For sure, if we were in a house or somewhere down low, we would have evacuated.

“We basically moved everything away from the windows. We started camping out in the hallway last night, just in case. Worst-case scenario, we have a backpack beside the door with food and water and clothes and we could go out into the stairwell if we have to.”

On Sunday afternoon, the couple still had power and water. On Friday, the building’s management company closed the front doors and asked residents to stay indoors.

“We’re on the 22nd floor so the building is swaying a bit, which is eerie,” Jones said.

“You can hear some creaks as you go to the stairwells.”

Jones and Hebblethwaite both said this is the first powerful storm they’ve experienced.

“When we were little, we were both around when Black Friday happened, but we don’t remember it,” Hebblethwaite said. “This is not like anything that I remember being through before.”

On July 31, 1987, 27 people were killed and hundreds injured when an F-4 tornado ripped through Alberta’s Capital Region, leaving a 37-kilometre path of destruction behind it.
